I would like to make the overall theme of my works to be based on horses. I want to use unique and uncommon perspectives of the horse and zoom in on specific parts of the horse. Through charcoal drawings, paintings, ink sketches, print making, and photographs, I will explore different materials and forms of media to represent my theme, horses. I would like to venture into more abstract horse drawings as I have in the past only focused on lifelike, realistic images of horses.
Through line (with pen/permanent marker) I would like to concentrate on some drawings that vaguely represent horses and encourage the viewer to focus on the horses body structure. The very distinct lines will help me to concentrate on viewing the horse as a whole and focus on the horses movement, muscles, bones etc.
I am choosing to use horses as my inspiration because I have always been passionate about them and infatuated with their beauty. Growing up riding horses since the age of 4, I have experienced a variety of riding styles and sports involving horses such as show jumping and polo. Because I love horses I have been using them as the subject for many of my works since I began painting and drawing at the age of 11. I want to incorporate the up close and personal side of horses and hopefully show a more intimate side. I want the viewer to see the horse as a "friendly giant".
Horses are my passion and choosing to use them in my artwork has really pushed me to discover them in depth. My goal is to make the viewer feel a connection to horses and their beauty just as I do. I am interested in stepping out of my comfort zone and trying different mediums that I have not worked with in the past. I want to challenge the viewer to become closer to horses through the works I produce by gaining a better/closer understanding of their personality and body structure. I hope to convey horses personality through expressive painting, drawing etc. in order to bring my works to life.
Caroline - I know that you said that you didn't want to focus on the form of a horse but I couldn't help but think of Picasso as a source for horse imagery - across many stages of his career. One example is a series of studies that he did for his painting Guernica.
ReplyDeleteOn a completely different track - an artist that focusses on the sculpture of design objects such as those associated with riding - Libby Black

one more thing: I imagine that there are different kinds of props and gear for different uses of horses - from polo to farming to ranching to rodeo. How can you account for these design and class differences?
