Dallas Gallery District

On our field trip to the gallery district of Dallas I found the 40/40 Forty Years Forty Portraits the most influential exhibition, especially at the Conduit Gallery. This exhibition, by Guy Mendes, is the past forty years portrayed in portraits of interesting people of the South. What I found truly fascinating by this exhibition were specific people in the portraits such as Ashley Judd and Ben Sollee, faces I recognized, all the way to other artists such as Ralph Eugene Meatyard, who I had never heard of. After looking up background information on Guy Mendes I found that he does much more than photography and actually started out in journalism. It is always interesting to see artists do other things other than their craft and be successful as well. He has even won several Emmy awards for his documentary writing, directing, and producing for the Kentucky Educational Television. It's amazing to me that he is so well rounded and is still successful as a photographer.
I also really enjoyed the last gallery we visited and was amazed at the cost of the artwork in the gallery. I couldn't believe the $22,000 price tag for a single piece of work. I found this particular gallery very unusual because of the side room it had with everything from old CDs for sale to vintage looking suitcases. Overall I throughly enjoyed our field trip and am thankful we get opportunities such as this one.
